Stain removal: Chelates play a crucial role in stain removal by enhancing the solubility and removal of metal ions present in stains. Chelating agents form complexes with metal ions, such as iron or copper, which are commonly found in stains caused by rust, hard water, or pigments. These complexes help to break down and lift the stains, making them more easily removable during the washing process.


Antiredeposition: Chelates help prevent soil redeposition onto fabrics during the washing process. Soil particles can reattach to fabrics, reducing the effectiveness of detergents. Chelating agents bind to metal ions present in the soil particles, preventing their redeposition and keeping them suspended in the wash water, thus improving the overall cleaning performance.


Detergent stability: Chelating agents also contribute to detergent stability by protecting against the degradation caused by metal ions. Metal ions can catalyze reactions that lead to the breakdown of detergent components, reducing their effectiveness and shelf life. Chelates sequester these metal ions, preventing their detrimental effects on the detergent formulation.
